Discord is making some users verify their age using face and ID scans

Discord has started restricting some users from accessing sensitive content on the communication platform until you verify your age, according to a new support page (spotted by The Verge).

The verification process involves either scanning your face with a webcam or visiting a QR code with your mobile device and uploading a photo of your ID card. This is a one-time verification, with options to re-verify or undergo a manual review if the process fails. Users who are deemed too young by the automatic verification could end up being banned.

Discord says this age verification process is “experimental” and meant to guard against access to sexually explicit material and other types of content only meant for certain age groups. “Age verification is required to unblur media flagged by our sensitive media filter and to update your sensitive media filter settings,” says the support page.

According to The Verge, Discord says none of the information collected during the verification process is stored by the company or any of its vendors. And as of this writing, the age verification experiment is only live in the UK and Australia. The company has neither confirmed nor denied whether it’ll roll out to other regions in the future.
