Definition: Metaverse - A hypothesized 3D version of the internet in which we will spend most of our lives. Pitch: I've been working on figuring out what it takes to build a real social organization and civilization in a digital space for 8 years now. I've been doing social experiments on gaming servers and even built a game-creation company based on the idea. I feel like I've been striking at matches for years and all of a sudden everything just caught fire. I'm extremely lucky to be leading an incredible team of positive, motivated people and even though we are still in the early stages, I have mostly replaced myself. With Covid many people started looking for online jobs and the gaming industry boomed. It’s never been easier to start a gaming studio online. However, for those who have never made a game, it’s fraught with risk since making games is highly complicated and many early issues don’t present themself until 1-2 years later and those issues can derail an entire project. Anyway, I'm on this subreddit because I would like to explore the idea of teaming up with somebody to get one more project going. Offering: I have 12+ years experience in marketing and have partnered up with a highly capable networking/technical co-founder and we are seeking an active co-founder interested in getting into this space. Seeking: I feel like if we could find an active partner who could bring some finances to the project, we could make our mark on a booming space. We can build and market this thing but we need the ability to hire artists and other game devs to make it a reality. Context: Ever since Facebook announced that its changing its name to Meta, everyone's been buzzing about the “next big thing” being the Metaverse. It seems like it's a world of opportunity. However, many of the projects out there don't seem to come from a place of experience. It's not like virtual worlds haven't existed for decades. Second life is 18 years old now and I think it's important to look back at what could have been done better last time in order to make things really work this time. One massive game-changer is the emergence of VR/AR “XR” tech. The new control interface enabled by XR allows for an ease-of-use unseen in past decades. However, it seems like most of the industry is focused on N3Ts and C'rypt0c'urrency which don’t solve what I believe are the fundamental human nature and behavior problems that were unaccounted for last time. Whereas XR will enable widespread use and adoption of the Metaverse as Apple and other major companies push toward the “next computing platform”, no one is really exploring the problem of how to create real society in a digital space. Putting people in a virtual space does not necessarily lead to digital civilization. This has been my focus for the last 8 years. I believe that real reputations and accountability combined with strong incentives to invest in connections will be essential to our virtual future. Moreover, I believe connecting people who have shared interests and values rather than sticking everyone in the same space is important. Finally, gameplay built into the world by default helps create context, break the ice and give a sense of shared mission and vision. I already have an established gaming community of shared values and interests and I believe if we can get something really meaningful going with that group, we can then open up the tools to other communities and build a network of communities as the foundation of the Metaverse. What we're looking for is someone passionate about the Metaverse and creating a future that is of-for-and-by the people like we are. We need someone who wants to be actively involved in this space and brings capital to help make it happen.
