Carter Glass was one of the more significant Virginia politicians in the early part of the 20th century. A Lynchburg native, he was to represent both houses of Congress, and was the Secretary of the Treasury under Woodrow Wilson. He was instrumental in establishing the Federal Reserve System. A true advocate of "State's Rights", Glass was a consistent opponent of the New Deal and clashed with President Roosevelt many times (though Roosevelt offered to appoint him again as Secretary of the Treasury in 1933, an offer which Glass declined).-Print ed.
