HISTORY ASPECTS:The Boulton Paul Defiant MK I was a British fighter aircraft used during World War II. It was designed and manufactured by Boulton Paul Aircraft Limited and entered service with the Royal Air Force (RAF) in 1939. The Defiant was a unique aircraft in that it was designed with a turret-mounted gun as its primary armament rather than wing-mounted guns like most other fighters at the time.The Defiant saw its first action during the Battle of Britain in 1940 where it was used by RAF Fighter Command to engage German bombers. Despite initial success the Defiants lack of speed and maneuverability quickly became apparent and it was soon relegated to a night fighter role.The Defiant served in a number of conflicts during the war including the Battle of Britain the Blitz and the defense of Malta. It also saw action in North Africa and the Mediterranean Theater.
