Ubuntu and the Reconstitution of Community

1. This collection explores the concept of "ubuntu," the idea that individuals are shaped by community. This was an integral part of the promise of a post-colonial Africa, and specifically, post-apartheid South Africa where it was part of the constitution. 2. Editor James Ogude and the contributors to this volume argue that given the struggles the continent and nation continue to have over race and economic opportunity, it is time for a reassessment of the concept of "ubuntu." 3. Ogude is Director of the Centre for the Advancement of Scholarship at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. He has unified both senior scholars and younger voices in this new volume.
