[Meta] Open Source Contributions Policy at the companies you found?

Hello everybody. As many of you know, open source software allows many of you to hit the ground running and provides resources and capabilities that you otherwise would not have. As a part of this, many of the companies that get started these days explicitly start with an open source contribution policy that is permissive and allows people to work on open source at work, because these projects are often used by the company themselves. It makes sense for somebody who works at these companies to be allowed to contribute back and improve the software, so that the company itself can benefit from that work. And sponsoring open source contributions is also a great way for ethical companies to find the best people for their engineering staff. What are your experiences creating these sort of policies at your companies? What are some traps that you have found? What did you have problems with? What should your fellow humans who want to create these kind of things at more mature companies be aware of? This thread is explicitly about getting the data out there, so that other companies and other people can perpetuate open source in commercial environments so any information you want to give us that will help with that goal is highly welcome. If you were not aware of what open source is, please check out the open source definition at http://opensource.org/osd and if you have a better link, let me know so I can approve the post (links are still removed by automoderator) if I don’t see it after work as I’m on lunch to post this and have a busy day. Asking because I have been contacted by cofounders that have asked this, and I would like to create a thread with resources for all of us to leverage. submitted by /u/honestduane [link] [comments] https://www.reddit.com/r/cofounder/comments/ppj5ao/meta_open_source_contributions_policy_at_the/
