Custom Qualcomm chips will power Microsoft’s augmented reality future

Qualcomm said Tuesday at CES that the company is working with Microsoft to develop custom augmented-reality chips to help the two companies develop lightweight augmented-reality glasses.

Qualcomm, which has already developed what it calls its Snapdragon Spaces XR Developer Platform, plans to integrate it with Microsoft Mesh, Microsoft’s own platform to help it establish the “metaverse” that Facebook (now Meta) popularized. Qualcomm didn’t provide a timeline for when

MSI jams a 14-core Core i9-12900H and GeForce RTX 3080 Ti into a tiny laptop

Just what are the limits of a thin and light laptop? MSI looks to test that with its new Creator Z16P, which manages to jam a 14-core 12th gen Core i9-12900H CPU and—we repeat—and Nvidia’s new GeForce RTX 3080 Ti GPU into a fairly thin portable.

How thin? The Z16P is 0.75-inches thick, or just over 19mm. The laptop’s footprint is about 14×10 inches, which makes it pretty petite for the hardware it packs.

Of course, with this much hardware in such a small pa

Asus entices gamers with 4K OLED monitors and an ultra-custom keyboard

Asus has a full-court press at CES 2022, despite the diminished circumstances, and its Republic of Gamers (ROG) sub-brand is right out in front. Easily the most eye-catching of its new products is a pair of OLED gaming monitors, both packing 4K resolution and 120Hz refresh rates. The ROG Swift OLED PG42UQ is claimed as “the world’s first 42-inch OLED gaming monitor,” and we’re not about to argue. It’s also available in a 48-inch model, the PG48UQ.

These bristling Asus ROG Rapture routers are home network hot rods

Asus continues to refine its powerful ROG Rapture routers with the announcement of not one, but two new products at CES 2022. These eye-catching pieces of kit feature extremely aggressive “gamer”-esque stylings—and they should be just as fast as they look.

The most significant of the two is the Wi-Fi 6E quad-band Asus ROG Rapture GT-AXE16000. This new router is similar to last year’s Rapture GT-AXE11000 in most ways: It will offer up to 4.8Gbps throughput on each of

Intel makes PCs that talk to TVs and smartwatches an Evo perk

Intel showed off what you can expect from its purchase of Screenovate last December: cross-platform communication from your PC to Android tablets, smartwatches, iPhones, and more—all reserved for specific Evo PCs.

On December 6, Intel bought Israeli developer Screenovate, reportedly for $100 million. The company is now part of Intel’s Client Computing Group. At CES 2022, where Intel announced new 12th-gen Alder Lake CPUs for laptops, plus an expansion of its Alder Lake processor

Intel reveals 22 more 12th-gen ‘Alder Lake’ CPUs, some without E-cores

Were you hoping that Intel would sell the new 12th-gen Core “Alder Lake” desktop chips with only performance cores? If so, you’ve got your wish… sort of.

At CES 2022, Intel answered some of the questions surrounding its “Alder Lake” 12th-gen desktop Core chips, unveiling the remaining 22 processors, the supporting chipsets, and even the coolers that will chill the chips. Intel also unexpectedly launched the 12th-gen “KS” processor, which will

Alienware’s x14 is the “world’s thinnest gaming laptop”

Can you make a thin gaming laptop without sacrificing performance or gaming features you’ve come to expect? Alienware says its new x14 does just that while claiming to be the “world’s thinnest gaming laptop.”

By gaming features we mean such luxuries as a 14-inch 1920×1080 144Hz screen with G-Sync Advanced. G-Sync Advanced, if you don’t know, lets the laptop automatically switch between a direct connection from the GPU when running on AC to a hybrid GPU mo

Dell’s 14-core XPS 13 Plus is unlike any XPS you’ve ever seen

Dell’s original thin-bezel XPS 13 set the pace for all other laptop designs, and now Dell is looking to do it again with its gorgeous new XPS 13 Plus. The star of the show? Dell has loaded the XPS 13 Plus with Intel’s new 12th gen Alder Lake processors, giving the machines a formidable performance boost.

But let’s start with the physical design, and that conversation begins with a striking difference that sets the XPS 13 Plus apart from the slightly lighter XPS 13: the int

Netgear’s Nighthawk RAXE300 makes cutting-edge Wi-Fi 6E more affordable

The Nighthawk RAXE500 was one of the first-out-of-the-gate Wi-Fi 6E routers, and in my estimation, the only one so far to truly show the promise of Wi-Fi 6E. While other existing 6E routers I’ve used have been impressive, allowing me to peek behind the curtains to see the low-latency, high-bandwidth future of Wi-Fi, Netgear’s initial release in this space was the first one to throw the curtains wide. It was prohibitively expensive, however, and overkill for most networks.

As you
