People are excited for AMD’s newest graphics cards, if only because they’re desperate for an alternative to Nvidia’s ever-increasing prices. But the Radeon range was snubbed in AMD’s CES 2025 keynote and only got a brief preview at the show, even though the RX 9070 and 9070 XT have been confirmed for sometime next month. Today, we might finally have a glimpse at some hard specs.
A GPU-Z screenshot showing all the juicy details under the hood of the 9070 XT was posted to Twitter (un-formerly X) by HKEPC Media. While this is something that could easily be faked, they’ve generally been a reliable source in the past and they’ve also got some benchmark results, as noted by VideoCardz.com.
Here’s the skinny on the 9070 XT, according to the GPU-Z screenshot:
- Navi 48 RDNA 4 GPU
- 16GB GDDR6 VRAM
- 256-bit bus width
- 644.6 GB/s bandwidth
- 2.57GHz base clock speed, 3.1GHz boost
It’s a little hard to pin down precisely where the 9070 XT will sit in comparison to Nvidia’s latest cards, or even against AMD’s previous 7000 series. The switch to an X0X0 naming scheme indicates that AMD is trying to compete with the $750 RTX 5070 Ti (while the regular, non-XT variant of the RX 9070 would be competing with the RTX 5070). 16GB of memory would match the 5070 Ti and put it at the level of the last-gen AMD RX 7800 XT ($500 at launch).
It’s fascinating that a new generation of AMD cards is apparently ceding ground at the tip top of the market ($1,000 and above) to Nvidia. But it makes sense given that Nvidia is the most profitable company on the planet (at least by some measures) thanks to the AI boom, and PC gamers still seem to prefer it by an overwhelming margin.
But the more immediate question for consumers is how much the RX 9070 XT will cost, and whether it will offer significant savings versus the 5070 Ti at $750. Ditto for the RX 9070, which will presumably be compared to the RTX 5070 at $550. And, of course, the value proposition for both of these cards will depend on their performance compared to both the current Nvidia offerings and AMD’s last-gen cards.
